Volunteer at St. Paul’s

Within the Children’s Centre we have Family Support and Early Years departments able to offer volunteering opportunities.  You will gain experience in working with parents and children in a group or home environment, working alongside qualified staff across our sites in the Hall Green District.  All placements are subject to suitable references and DBS check, which the volunteer co-ordinator will process.

Our current vacancies are:

Breastfeeding Peer Support Workers – Support mothers with breastfeeding at the centre or on home visits.

Reception – Working within the administration team, this role involves working on the reception desks either at Malvern Street or Braithwaite Road, operating the switchboard, dealing with parent enquiries and greeting and directing visitors.

Toddler Talk – Support the Language Through Play Worker in delivering weekly sessions over a 5 week course for parents with children who may be experiencing delays with their speech and language.

We also work closely with local organisations supporting them with their volunteering vacancies.  Current vacancies are:

Stay & Play Leader – Thursdays 9am – 12noon at Kings Heath Community Centre, 8 Heathfield Road, Kings Heath, B14 7DB

If you decide you want to enter into the world of work and want to experience what it might be like to work in Early Years, Volunteering is an excellent way to gain work experience, develop new skills, build up your CV, make new friends and enjoy new experiences. The Nursery will provide you with a wealth of experiences.

Volunteering Opportunities

Nursery Assistant – You will be able to work alongside experienced staff who will support you to develop good observational skills, support you to understand the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) to be able to plan high quality and stimulating experiences. Learn all about the different approaches we use.

Admin Assistant – If you feel Early Years is not for you, the nurseries also provide volunteering experience of administrative skills, these will include working alongside the Manager or Senior members of staff to ensure paperwork is in the correct order, displays look fresh and presentable, answering the phone, passing messages to the correct person, keeping office spaces tidy and presentable. 

Marketing & Communications Assistant – We are looking for a volunteer for St Paul’s Nursery who would be willing to support with promoting the Nursery, via digital marketing and growing our online presence, as well as more traditional methods such as leafleting and adverts.

Bid Writer –  Do you have a talent for writing documents? Would you like to gain some bid writing experience? The nurseries are looking for a volunteer to work alongside Senior Managers to prepare and write some small scale funding applications.

The Nest Afterschool Club

Would you like playwork experience? Our after-school club has a lively mix of children who love playing, we welcome volunteers willing to help escort the children from 5 local primary schools with our walking bus to the club.

We have fantastic facilities where the children love to play, outside on play equipment; on the sports pitch; on the city farm and inside where we have 3 different rooms; help with supervising the children to have free choice is really appreciated. You may have skills that you’d like to share with the children as well such as cooking, sewing projects, sports, or other craft activities.

In return you’ll gain valuable experience of working with primary aged children that can help with finding employment in schools or other play settings. In fact, many of the staff currently working in the club started out as volunteers.

Holiday Playschemes

Do you want to make a difference working with local children? This summer we have an exciting playscheme funded by ‘Children in Need’. It’s called ‘The Curiosity’ Playscheme and we’ll be encouraging children to enjoy informal science-based activities such as building Go Karts, creating mini robots, doing messy experiments, having fun with environmental activities like bug hunts and exploring in forest walks, den building and more!

We’ll be taking the children out on trips too. Some of the children have additional needs and all of them want to have fun, make friends, and enjoy their summer.

We welcome volunteers from the community if we have any vacancies, especially those with skills with animals, gardening, DIY, fundraising, marketing or graphic design!

We have volunteering opportunities available in finance which could include processing, posting and paying purchase invoices, processing, posting and recording receipts for sales ledger. Also duties could include processing petty cash and cashing up any cash we receive. Also duties could include assisting on Payroll processing on a weekly or monthly basis.
