Girls of Brum at Alexander Stadium: Rain, Resilience & Big Ideas!

Together St Paul’s RISE Girls Youth Hub had an amazing day at the Girls of Brum Summer Showcase Event, held at the iconic Alexander Stadium and delivered by Sports Birmingham 💜

Girls of Brum brings together schools, communities, and organisations from across Birmingham to celebrate and champion girls in sport, physical activity, and leadership. The event is all about empowering girls to feel confident, resilient, and included, creating opportunities to try new things, build confidence, and be inspired by positive role models.

Despite heavy rain, strong winds, and some very chilly conditions 🌧️, our team showed real resilience throughout the day. Even when the weather challenged us (and tried its best to send our display boards flying!), we stayed positive, adapted quickly, and kept engaging with girls throughout the event.

Our stall was packed with fun, creativity, and colour! 🎨

Girls took part in:

  • 💖 Friendship bracelet making
  • 🎨 Face painting
  • 🏆 A logo design competition
  • 🍬 Free sweets

One of the highlights of the day was our interactive youth voice board 💭📝

We asked:

“If you could design the perfect youth hub, what would it have and why?”

Before receiving a face paint, girls shared their ideas on Post-it notes and added them to our board. The responses were thoughtful, creative, and inspiring, highlighting safe spaces, fun activities, friendship, and places to feel supported and heard.

Throughout the day, we engaged with 188 girls from schools across Birmingham, giving us a fantastic opportunity to introduce young people to RISE – Youth Power & Potential (Resilience, Inclusion, Support Empowerment), our exciting new youth leadership programme 🌟

Funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, RISE has been developed to give young people more opportunities to lead, influence change, develop new skills, and make a positive difference in their communities. Through youth-led activities, leadership opportunities, and a supportive youth hub environment, RISE aims to help young people grow in confidence, build resilience, strengthen their identity, and feel empowered to have their voices heard.

Many of the conversations we had at Girls of Brum reflected exactly why RISE is needed. Girls shared ideas about the importance of safe spaces, trusted adults, opportunities to make friends, and activities that support their wellbeing and personal development. It was inspiring to see so many young people eager to share their views and help shape the future of youth provision in Birmingham 💜

The event also gave us a brilliant opportunity to:

  • 📣 Raise awareness of the Girls Youth Hub and RISE
  • 🤝 Connect with girls from across Birmingham
  •  🫂 Share the work we do in the community
  • 💪 Strengthen our relationship with Sports Birmingham
  • 🌟 Network with a range of organisations and activity providers, including Hollywood Bowl, Crescent Archers, sports organisations, and community partners from across the city

A huge thank you to everyone who visited our stall, joined in the activities, and shared their ideas, and to all the girls who braved the weather with us! ☔💜

We’re excited to take all the feedback forward and continue building a youth space shaped by young people, for young people 🌟
