“We Just Want Somewhere to Be” – Local Youth Call for Safe and Inclusive Spaces

Over 80 young people from Balsall Heath and surrounding areas have come forward with a clear and united message: they want spaces that feel safe, fun, inclusive, and shaped by their voices.
During recent engagement sessions — including street chats, open days, and interactive boards — young people aged 11–16 highlighted what matters to them:
- Gaming tournaments and chill rooms with LED lights
- DJ workshops and music rooms
- Film and pizza nights
- Skincare, bath bombs, bracelet making
- Safe discussions and girls-only spaces
- Female-led sports like football and basketball
Crucially, young people want spaces that don’t feel like school — no judgement, no pressure — just places to relax, connect, and belong. Girls consistently asked for female-only nights and female staff, with many highlighting faith and cultural sensitivities.
“Being Muslim means I can’t go to all mixed things – but that doesn’t mean I don “Let us run something ourselves like a wellbeing club.”
These insights mirror national trends. With youth service funding cut by over 70% since 2010, young people across the UK are missing out on safe, meaningful opportunities. But here in Balsall Heath, they’re showing us the way forward — with creativity, honesty, and ambition.
We’re listening. We will act.
